Despite not coming from a family with any involvement in railways (from a road haulage background and work in that industry to this day), I was always interested in railways from an early age.

Spurred on by a friend of mine and several members of the Hawick & District Railway Society, I purchased my first SLR, the Cosina C1. I never looked back and after progressing through the Minolta 404si, the Minolta digital 5D, the Sony a100, the Sony a77, I now use the full frame Sony a99 SLT.

I originally come from Hawick in the Scottish Borders – a fair distance from the nearest railway until recently – and sadly am too young to witness the Waverley route in it’s heyday. I now reside in Carluke, just to the east of Glasgow, in easy reach of transport links to many parts of Scotland.

I class myself as a conventional railway photographer and take most of my shot as a standard 3/4 view with the sun over my shoulder. I’m equally at home taking ‘modern image’ shots as well as steam, although being Scottish based has a lot to do with this (less railways to chose from). Over the years, I progressed to taking a lot of my shots early morning and early evening to get the best of the light. Good quality light for me is one thing that spurs me on time after time.
